A letter to film faculty
Dear colleague,
The Arts Club of Washington invites your students to enter its Scholarship Competition in Documentary Filmmaking. Three monetary scholarships will be awarded. Winning films are screened for members and guests at the club's home, the James Monroe House, where the club has belonged to the arts since 1916. Entries are judged on the work alone.
Entries open October 1, 2026, and close February 28, 2027. Students submit a documentary of at least ten minutes (as a private or unlisted YouTube link), a short written statement, and one recommendation letter from a faculty member familiar with their work. The competition is open to undergraduate and graduate students at accredited colleges and universities in DC, Maryland, and Virginia - all majors, community colleges included, no entry fee.
Our ask is simple: announce the competition to your students, and consider writing for the ones whose work deserves a room. Guidance for recommendation letters - what the independent jury finds most useful - is on the site, along with the full rules and calendar.
With appreciation,
The Scholarship Committee
